MARIA PAPADOPOULOS
(b. 1988, Barcelona, Spain).
I work at the intersection of art and critical research. Based in Barcelona, I develop interdisciplinary projects that connect artistic direction, production and conceptual framing. I understand space, time and technical infrastructures as active dramaturgical forces that shape how bodies, images and sonic environments are perceived. I work with heterogeneous elements — text, movement, light, sound and institutional frameworks — weaving them into coherent structures, much as language constructs the fabric of a book. For me, production is not secondary to creation; it is embedded within the compositional logic of the work itself. With a background in journalism, fine arts, and comparative studies in literature, art and thought, I approach each project through research, writing and structural design. I collaborate with artists across theatre, installation, expanded cinema and sound-based practices, accompanying processes from early conceptual development to technical realisation and international presentation. My work integrates spatial thinking, budget design, technical coordination and long-term project planning, building the conditions that allow complex artistic processes to unfold with clarity, precision and conceptual rigour.
JOAN LAVANDEIRA
(b. 1979, Santiago, Chile).
I work at the intersection of sound, image, space, and technology. As an engineer and visual-sound artist based in Barcelona since 2004, my practice investigates how sonic and visual phenomena can reshape the perception of architecture, movement, and the body. I treat space as both material and instrument, creating environments where light, video, spatial sound, and digital processes generate new forms of sensorial and emotional experience.
My work expands across architectural interventions, virtual and digital worlds, video art, and performance. I develop immersive systems using MAX/MSP, TouchDesigner, Unreal Engine, and a wide range of sound tools—from modular synthesis and field recordings to feedback techniques and complex signal processing. This hybrid approach allows me to explore the threshold between the real and the synthetic, the physical and the virtual, the composed and the emergent.
In the performing arts, I collaborate closely with dance, contemporary circus, and performance artists, crafting sonic and visual dramaturgies that respond to bodies in motion. I see technology not as spectacle, but as a porous layer between humans, environments, and memories—an active agent that transforms how we inhabit and imagine space.
I am also a member of Acoustic Heritage, a collective dedicated to investigating the relationship between acoustics, perception, and emotional responses. Our work focuses on the social, political, and creative implications of sound, exploring how acoustic spaces can construct meaning and alter the way listening unfolds. Through this research, I deepen my interest in the cultural and perceptual dimensions of sound, and how environments—physical or virtual—shape our auditory experience.
Beyond performance, I develop contemporary music, lighting design, visual works, and software-based artistic systems. My projects have been presented in festivals and institutions such as SONAR, MUTEK, MIRA, Berlin Atonal, IRCAM, MONOM, Fusion, CTM, GAM, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatre Lliure, Mercat de les Flors, the GREC Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe, among many others.
I co-founded the creative studio Isolator Space with Magdalena Lanas, where we explore interdisciplinary approaches to sound, light, and digital environments. Since 2017, I also direct the experimental electronic music label PostStructural-ISM, bridging artistic research, aesthetics of noise, and contemporary electronic practices across Barcelona and Berlin.
My work is driven by a continuous search: to understand how sound and image can activate new forms of presence, how technology can expand the limits of perception, and how artistic practice can produce spaces—physical or imaginary—where the viewer becomes immersed, destabilized, and transformed.
